Dionne Brand is a poet, documentarian, essayist, and novelist. A highly decorated writer who has won many awards, she served as Toronto’s 3rd Poet Laureate (2009-2012), and the cities first Black Poet Laureate, and was admitted to the Order of Canada in 2017. Brand is best known for her writing, however, she is also an exceptional filmmaker as well. Her directorial works touched on themes of gender, racism, sexuality, friendship, and art.
